African Rhythms in South America

Program Overview

Salvador da Bahia has an energy and natural beauty that few cities can match. Brazil’s colonization began in Bahia, as did the slave trade. Today, Bahia has the largest concentration of Afro-Brazilians in the country (80%) and Brazil has the largest population of African origin outside Africa! These origins are very evident in the culture and traditions of the Bahia region. The food, music, language, arts and religion are all very unique. The rhythm of the drums, spiciness of the food, and good-nature and happiness of the people combine to make this a very special place to visit. In fact, UNESCO has designated Salvador the “City of Music”. It’s the home of samba and samba reggae.

Michael Jackson recorded a music video of “They Don´t Care About Us” in Salvador’s historical center. Have a look here to get a good idea of the sights and sounds of Salvador. In the video Michael sings and plays with the Carnival band Olodum, a percussion group known for their popular Bahia rhythms such as samba-reggae and samba.

This program offers a a surprising immersion in Arts & Culture. Guests will experience a visual and sensory journey to the world of Carnival, including Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian cultural legacy, attend a Bahia percussion rhythm workshop to learn about the music and techniques of playing samba, visit an open market and discover exotic fruits, spices, rolls of tobacco, home goods, pottery, religious items and much more.  This is a program to learn about the rich history of Salvador told through art, gastronomy, faith and more.

Last but not least is two nights’ stay at  Praia do Forte, located one hour from Salvador . It was once just a small fishing village, but it is now being developed into an eco-friendly, upscale beach resort. It offers diverse ecosystems, beautiful beaches criss-crossed by by rivers and estuaries, dunes, coconut groves, lagoons and mangroves. Relax on the beach, drinking  a caipirinha while the turtles have fun in the calm and warm sea. Praia do Forte  is a nesting place for sea turtles and many others come to feed on its beaches.  Restore balance and harmony between body and mind with a relaxing massage inspired by traditional Brazilian culture and Thai influences. Enjoy a special candlelight romantic dinner in a beach-front, private tent.
